Athanasia crithmifolia
ASTERACEAE
- A wonder plant that occurs in a range of Cape Town lowland veld types including sand fynbos, granite fynbos, wetlands and renosterveld. This fast-growing evergreen shrub displays attractive, soft, feathery foliage and reaches 2m in height. Its late spring/early summer flowering season sees it awash with dense, rich, golden-yellow umbels (big fluffy pompoms!) which become a very inviting pollen and nectar source for beetles, bees, butterflies and more. A veritable pollinator refuelling station!
- Flowering time: October-December
In your garden: Plant in full sun and well drained soil, water well to establish, water-wise thereafter. No compost or fertiliser. Perfect as a filler in new gardens or to transform a dull area into a pocket of sunshine.
Distribution: Found growing on sandy flats and slopes, often along drainage lines, in the southwestern Cape
