FABACEAE
- A fast-growing tree to 4m, this Cape Town local produces a mass of pretty lilac flowers in late spring/summer – long after most spring-flowering species are over.
- Flowering time: October-January
In your garden: Suitable for sunny, seasonally wet gardens, artificial wetlands or eco-pool surrounds. Expect a buzz of carpenter bees, seed- and insect-eating birds and softly filtered light reaching the bed below. Use a sturdy stake and keep vertical branches trimmed to prevent plants from falling over in gale force winds.
Distribution: Clanwilliam to Cape Town and up the east coast to Mpumalanga
